Whether you're looking for a new pair of dress slacks or a pair of pull-on jeans, you'll want to measure inseam to ensure the best, most comfortable fit. Here's how to get it.

What is the inseam?

An inseam is one of a pair of pants’ inside seams that runs from the crotch (top of the thigh) to the bottom of each leg (ankle). More commonly, the inseam is the length of this inner seam, a measurement used for fitting

How to Measure Inseam, Solo Method

how to measure inseam

  1. The easiest way to learn your inseam length is by measuring the inseam of a pair of pants that fits you well. Lay these pants or jeans flat on the floor and fold lengthwise at the fly.

  2. With a tape measure, measure the distance from the bottom of the fly to the bottom of the pant leg.

  3. Record the length in inches, rounding up to the nearest half inch.

How to Measure Inseam, Assisted

  1. If you have someone available to help, stand against a wall with your legs straight and have your friend measure the length of one leg from the bottom of your crotch to your ankle.

  2. Record the length in inches, rounding up to the nearest half inch.

Tips for Using Your Inseam to Find the Right Pants

  • Add 1/2 inch to the inseam if you’re buying pants that you will machine-wash to account for potential shrinkage.

  • Consider the shoes you’ll be wearing with the pair of pants you're considering purchasing, adjusting for the height of the soles. Heels, for instance, may require an additional 1/2-to-1 inch of inseam to accommodate the additional height. You may even want to take your inseam measurement while wearing shoes, measuring to the point where you want your pant legs to end.

Women’s Sizing and Inseams

While men’s inseams are typically included in their pant sizes, women’s pant sizes are based on height and categorized as petite, short, regular, long, and tall. Most pants have the following inseams based on sizing.
